Kwara United on Wednesday defeated Nasarawa United 2-1 in a midweek clash of the Euromatch NPFL Matchday 5 at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl of the George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
The Harmony Boys showed grit and resilience throughout the encounter, particularly in the first half, and were rewarded for their impressive start when Jerry Alex dispossessed an opponent and released a pass to Sanni Muhammed.
Muhammed, displaying composure and determination, unleashed a close-range shot following a solo effort to put Kwara United ahead in the 12th minute.
The hosts continued to dominate proceedings as they pushed for a second goal, but Nasarawa United found a way back into the game after capitalising on a loose ball that resulted in a corner kick.
Jofrank Istifanus reacted quickest inside the box, firing past Kwara United goalkeeper Ouattara Khalifa to level the scores and send both sides into the break at 1-1.
In the second half, Kwara United head coach Ashifat Suleiman introduced Adeshina Gata, Stephen Godwin and Abdulsalam Abdulsalam as he sought to increase the tempo and attacking threat of his side.
The changes paid off immediate dividends. Stephen Godwin received a pass from Gata and managed to get a shot away despite being awkwardly positioned. Nasarawa United goalkeeper Joshua Oladeji could only parry the effort, and Abdulsalam Abdulsalam was on hand to fire home the rebound and restore Kwara United’s lead.
The visitors pushed hard during the closing stages, creating several opportunities as they searched for an equaliser. However, Kwara United goalkeeper Stanley Victor who came off the bench and a resolute backline stood firm to repel the threats and secure maximum points for the Harmony Boys.
Kwara United goalkeeper Ouattara Khalifa was substituted after sustaining a shoulder injury.
Toyeeb Gidado was named the Cyteck Man of the Match following an impressive individual performance.
Speaking at the post-match conference, Kwara United head coach admitted that his side struggled with aerial balls, promising to work on the team’s shortcomings.
The coach also praised his players for securing all three points, adding that the team would build on the momentum as the league continues.
Kwara United will next travel to Owerri on Sunday to face Kun Khalifat in their next NPFL fixture while Nasarawa United play hosts to Niger Tornadoes.
