Abia Warriors secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Kwara United in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 6 fixture, on Sunday morning at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
The lone goal of the match was scored by Sunday Megwo in the 76th minute.
The clash, which was shifted to Sunday because of a heavy downpour after the surface of the pitch was waterlogged.
The game started with the visitors, Kwara United having some clear opportunities through Wasiu Alalade, but Warriors goalkeeper, Ali Ishaku was in the right place to clear out the ball.
Abia Warriors started to take more control of the match, creating several chances but were unable to convert them as both sides went into the halftime break with the game tied goalless.
The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when Megwo headed home a brilliant cross from second half substitute, Ayodele Ezekiel.
The ‘Umuchineke Boys’ as they are called, continued to push forward for a second goal but were unable to find the net through Ojonugwa Adejoh, but his low strike went over the cross bar.
Kwara United tried to get back into the match but were unable to create any clear-cut chance.
With this victory, Abia Warriors move a little bit further on the log on the league table with eight points from six matches.
