Alao Mohammed was again at the heart of Kwara United’s 2-0 win over Gombe United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Sunday.

The sensational midfielder volleyed home a left-footed shot in the 37th minute to the admiration of the fans who had come to watch the game at the Kwara State Stadium.

The visitors had shown glimpses of hope in the early exchanges and came close from securing the lead in the 35th minute when Mustapha Dan’azumi’s effort was rolling on to possible goal before Adewale Adeyinka stretched to push the ball away to safety for a corner.

Two minutes later, Alao Mohammed would add to his goal tally when he rolled in a clearance from goalkeeper Itodo Akor to send the hosts to the lead.

The hosts survived a scare early in the second half when Ahmed Jimoh’s placing went off target.

The visitors increased their chase for the equaliser, and eventually got a deserving penalty in the 54th minute. The Harmony Boys would have Adewale Adeyinka to thank as he denied Sadiq Shuaibu’s spot kick.

Later on, the introduction of new legs added vigour for the hosts upfront and it was just a matter of time for the change to pay up as super-sub Abubakar Garba slotted home the second goal from close range.

The victory ensured that Kwara United moved up to ninth position on the log as they prepare for a trip to Akwa United.

Speaking after the game, Gombe United assistant coach, Alhaji Kwairanga, stated that the performance of his team was affected by the accumulated stress of the long hours journey from their base in Gombe State.

“We arrived in Ilorin 4am in the morning. So, the fatigue and stress affected our game. It’s a long journey for us. We will go back to our drawing board and ensure that we beat Kano Pillars in our next game at home.

In his remarks, Kwara United head coach Kabiru Dogo commended his boys for their performance. He noted that the team will continue to improve, noting that the team will take every game as it comes.

“We are going to Akwa United to win. I don’t believe that there’s any team we can’t beat in this league. We thank everybody for their support and for believing in the team.

“I believe we have a very good team even though there are some challenges. It’s a good game for us today and the players, including the young ones really gave their best” he said.

For Muhammed Alao, he has now scored three important goals for the team, making him their highest goalscorer.
