It will be a full cast of fixtures in this weekend’s EUROMATCHNPFL with the signature matchup being a Top-of-the-table contest between champions Rangers International and last season’s runners-up Rivers United.
Table-toppers Rivers United and second-placed Rangers would be hoping to have a major say in the early title race, as both clubs are levelled on 17 points but separated by goals difference.
Rivers United will be keen to bounce back from a 1-2 defeat at Bendel Insurance which ended their unbeaten run.
On the other hand, the Flying Antelopes will shift their focus to their title defence after being dumped out of the CAF Champions League by Algerian side, MC Alger.
It is going to be a contest of the league’s best defence in Rivers United and one of the best attacking sides on the road. Rivers United have not conceded any goal at home while Rangers have netted seven times on the road with on Sporting Lagos scoring more, being 10.
However, Rivers United have the edge going into this fixture as they have won all previous 10 of this corresponding fixture since their name change from Dolphins FC. The last time, Rangers won in Port Harcourt was in 2003 when they won one-nil.
Rivers United have a chance to keep top spot should they win while Rangers, with two outstanding matches to play, can make a statement in their bid to defend their title.
However, if Rivers United and Rangers slip in the big clash, third-placed Nasarawa United on same point as the top-two could stand a chance of climbing to the summit for the first time this season if they can win at Kano Pillars.
The Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano has become a difficult hunting ground for Nasarawa United in recent years since that famous 2-1 win in 2015 that ended Kano Pillars’ 10-year unbeaten run at home.
Both teams will go into this match with decent form guides. Kano Pillars have lost just once this season (W3 D6 L1) when they suffered a 0-4 loss at Plateau United while Nasarawa United are on a five-game run without a defeat (W4 D1). It will boil down to squad quality to decide this contest.
This matchweek opens at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna where Niger Tornadoes play hosts to Barau FC in a 3pm kickoff.
Tornadoes will be keen to make it three win in three this Sunday after winning at Abia Warriors (1-0) and edging past Ikorodu City 2-1 in their previous home matches.
Barau FC, with no win in their last five matches (D4 L1), are expected to put up their usual organized style of play and look for a counterattack through their pacy wingers in Joseph Atule, Kennedy Energy Otunuya and Al-Amin Umar. Tornadoes will have to be at their best upfront to breach Barau FC’s backline.
The standalone Saturday fixture will be a closed door meeting between Doma United and Ikorodu City who face each other for the first time in the top division.
City are never afraid to play from the front on the road as Doma United will be made to work hard to make their advantage at their Pantami Stadium count. Both sides go into this match on the back of draws in their last matchday outings.
Plateau United were seconds away from pulling off their first away win at Katsina United before Umar Rabiu’s equalizer at the death denied them that chance. Now they play hosts to Warri Wolves who had three points and three goals docked from their total points and goals for infraction.
Gbenga Ogunbote would want his men to bounce back from their 2-3 setback at home of two matchdays ago against Sporting Lagos when Wolves come calling, otherwise the Jos club will lose ground on the early leaders.
Sporting Lagos have ticked all the right boxes when matches on the road are concerned so far this season. They have won three away matches, scored 10 and taken 10 points out of 15 available on the road.
Katsina United will definitely be up against a side capable of pressing high and playing through the channels. Last time both teams met in this same fixture, Katsina United won 2-0 with Andrew Idoko and Michael Okoro Ibe scoring but the Tech Boys will offer a different opposition this time.
One interesting fixture this matchweek will be a clash of bottom-four sides, Inter Lagos and Ranchers Bees at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Both teams are in poor runs ahead of this important match with Inter Lagos managing just a win in their debut season so far (W1 D2 L7).
Ranchers have sewn together a winless run in their last five matches (D2 L3) and just two wins in 10 matches all season and that makes this fixture finely balanced.
Three other matches are also up for Sunday’s schedule with Shooting Stars hosting Abia Warriors while Kwara United face Bendel Insurance. Former champions Enyimba go up against Kun Khalifat FC in a Southeast Derby.
