Chidera Michael and Kalu Nweke were the heroes of the day for nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba who put up an impressive show at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa to defeat Bayelsa United 2-0 on Sunday.
Two second half audacious goals from teenager, Chidera and Enyimba’s captain of the day, Nweke gave the People’s Elephant an emphatic first away league victory of the season.
Enyimba who were frustrated at home against Nasarawa United last Sunday took the game to their hosts, Bayelsa United, from the outset as Stanley Eguma’s side bossed the game and missed a couple of clear chances in the early moments.
The second half started almost in similar fashion even as Bayelsa United started growing in confidence with glimpse of attacks but two substitutions midway in the second half by Enyimba head coach Eguma paid off well when a well tailored inswing cross by Solomon Ogberaghwe was met by one of the substitutes, Chidera who glanced the ball into the net for the opener.
Nweke made sure of the points when he picked up a pass few metres away from the box before rifling home a screamer as the insurance goal.
The 2-0 victory represents a second win in four matches for Enyimba (W2 D2) which pushed them up into the top of the standings with eight points.
Enyimba will return to Aba next weekend with the hope of continuing their good form when Bendel Insurance come calling.
On the other hand, Bayelsa United have now suffered a second defeat of the campaign which means they dropped to eight position with six points and will play hosts to Nasarawa United in the next matchweek.
