Rivers United head coach, Finidi George, has appointed centre-back Temple Emekayi as the club’s captain for their remaining outing in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
Emekayi has been wearing the club’s armband since the departure of Nyima Nwagua in the off-season transfer window and he is expected to continue in the role.
Finidi announced the decision to make Emekayi captain ahead of their Matchday 6 game at Katsina United this Sunday.
“Temple Emekayi has been named the new captain of Rivers United ahead of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign.
“With the Pride of Rivers scheduled to face Katsina United in a matchday 6 fixture at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Sunday, Technical Manager Finidi George confirmed that the dependable centre-back will take the armband, having led the team since Nyima Nwagua’s departure and captained the side during the opening five matches this season,” a statement from the club read on Wednesday.
He joined the Rivers club in January 2019 and has played every minute for Finidi’s side this season in the NPFL. Emekayi is currently closing in on 100 NPFL matches for Rivers United as he has made 98 appearances since he joined the club five years ago.
Emekayi will be assisted by left-back Paul Odeh.
